More than 50 years of experience with submarines, puts KONGSBERG in a solid position as a major sub-supplier as the Norwegian government are planning to replace its aging fleet.

- We have a long history in providing combat systems for submarines. Since the late 60`s, KONGSBERG has delivered technology onboard all Norwegian submarines. In addition, KONGSBERG has delivered systems to Germany, Italy and other nations. Our deliveries are linked to the combat systems. Within the combat systems we are focusing mainly on command and control systems, navigation systems, sonar processing and tactical communication links, says Leiv Inge Steig in Kongsberg Defence Systems.

Norway’s six Ula class submarines were commissioned between 1989 and 1992, designed for a service life of thirty years. These submarines will be phased out in the 2020’s.

By the end of 2016, a recommendation on the future submarine capability will be presented. Thereafter, pending the Governments decision, an investment proposal will be presented to Parliament. This will enable the delivery of new submarines to the Norwegian Navy starting from the mid 2020’s.

GERMAN OR FRENCH
Two companies, German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and French Direction des Constructions Navales Services (DCNS), are now bidding for the contract with the Norwegian government.

- We have been working with them for several years and our aim is to get the best industry package with both of them, independent of who of them is being selected in the end, says Leiv Inge Steig in Kongsberg defence Systems.

Norwegian companies, KONGSBERG included, are world leading on submarine technology. The Norwegian government has a determined ambition to use the acquisition of submarines as a door-opener for Norwegian industry on the international marked.

VISIT FROM KIEL

This week, the submarine from the German company ThyssenKrupp, visited Norway. The submarine is assembled at the company’s shipyard in Kiel. During the visit, Kiels Lord Mayor came to Kongsberg on a friendly visit as well.

- We have had a warm welcome from the Kongsberg City and the Kongsberg Group. I have learned a lot about the qualities and the prospective of the Kongsberg industry. I hope we will have reasons to meet again, because that will mean that the cooperation is coming to life, says Dr. Ulf Kämpfer, Lord Mayor City of Kiel.
