K-Sim® Engine Instructor
A New Generation Monitoring, Assessment, and Configuration System
Developed in collaboration with experienced instructors, the Norwegian Maritime Directorate, and DNV, the K-Sim Engine Instructor System offers an intuitive, user-friendly control of student exercises, setting a new standard for efficiency and ease of use.
Powerful and User-Friendly
K-Sim Engine Instructor allows instructors to create customised exercise modules for individuals, teams, or a combination of both, from any PC running the application. The system offers full control over training modes, enabling instructors to switch between individual or team training. Instructors can easily monitor, assess, and control student performance by connecting to any student station.
Intuitive Exercise Development Tool
With the new instructor system, instructors can design complete exercise modules from any PC—whether in the simulator classroom, office, or remotely. Once an exercise is created, it can be sent directly to the instructor station or transferred via a memory stick.
Each exercise module can include:
- Initial conditions
- Triggers
- Actions
- E-Coach messages
- Student station configuration
- Assessment criteria
Initial Condition
An initial condition defines all the variables at the start of the exercise. These typically include conditions such as “Full Ahead at Sea,” “Manoeuvring,” or “Gas Free Condition.”
Triggers Using Boolean Graphic Blocks
A trigger is a combination of events that activates an action, e-Coach message, or serves as input during an assessment. The system can use up to 6,000 accessible variables and malfunctions to initiate triggers, offering great flexibility.
Actions: Comprehensive Choice of Parameters
An action is triggered by input variables or malfunctions, which can be initiated or pre-programmed as part of the exercise. Examples include “Sea Water Controller Failure” or changes in “Ambient Air Temperature.” The instructor determines how each action or malfunction affects the simulation, using step functions, pulses, pulse trains, sinusoidal functions, or random functions. These features can also be ramped for gradual changes. In addition to pre-programmed exercises, the instructor can introduce actions at any time to any student station or group of students.
e-Coach Messages
The e-Coach is an integrated feedback system that guides students based on their performance. It delivers messages in response to specific events, offering positive reinforcement, suggestions, errors, and warnings. The use of triggers and e-Coach messages makes the simulator an intelligent system, capable of providing real-time advice during exercises. The instructor can also send instant e-Coach messages to any student station or group, adding a powerful tool for guidance.
Assessment of All Parameters
The Instructor and Assessment System provides a comprehensive tool for evaluating student performance. Instructors can assess students on various levels, from support to management, using a range of available variables in the simulation. This system allows for the tracking and grading of every action, including alarms, with the flexibility to award credits or assign penalty points based on the student’s performance.
