DEWA's Space-D Programme: Revolutionizing Utility Management with Nanosatellite Technology
In 2022, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) selected Kongsberg NanoAvionics (NanoAvionics) to design, build, test, and manage the launch of two nanosatellites—3U and 6U.
These nanosatellites are designed to collect data from DEWA’s infrastructure, enabling real-time monitoring and enhanced management of their electricity and water networks. Equipped with advanced remote sensing capabilities and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, these nanosatellites will play a key role in optimizing operational performance and improving network reliability.
This initiative is part of DEWA's ambitious Space-D programme, which aims to revolutionize the planning, generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity and water through the use of space technology. By integrating nanosatellite technology into its operations, DEWA is leading the charge in driving innovation across the utilities sector, improving preventive maintenance, and reducing service disruptions.
The Space-D programme supports DEWA’s broader digitalization efforts by utilizing cutting-edge IoT and remote sensing technologies. These advancements will not only enhance DEWA’s ability to monitor its assets but also enable more agile and flexible network management. By gathering precise, real-time data, DEWA can improve asset utilization, optimize resource allocation, and drive greater efficiency throughout its grid systems.
Through the collaboration with NanoAvionics, DEWA aims to reduce operational costs, boost sustainability, and provide more reliable and efficient electricity and water services to its customers. By leveraging nanosatellite technology, DEWA is setting new standards for the future of smart utility management, reinforcing its position as a global leader in innovation and sustainability.
