Kongsberg Norcontrol enters Australian market with first Vessel Traffic Services Solution delivery in the region

Kongsberg Norcontrol has achieved a milestone in the Australian market with the delivery of its first Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) solution to the Pilbara Ports Authority, covering the Port of Dampier and Port of Ashburton in Western Australia. This is a leasing contract, valued at 72 million Norwegian kroner over five years

The project is a collaborative effort, with Kongsberg Norcontrol in Norway partnering with Kongsberg Maritime Australia to support local project facilitation.

We have ensured local procurement and engaged Australian resources, building strong relationships and teamworkwith our fellow Kongsberg colleagues and external partners.

Björn Coster, VP of Marketing & Sales at Kongsberg Norcontrol

This partnership extended through the delivery phase, resulting in high customer satisfaction. Kongsberg Norcontrol will continue providing dedicated support and maintenance throughout the contract period.

Situated along Western Australia’s coast, the Port of Dampier and Port of Ashburton are key economic hubs, primarily exporting iron ore, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and salt.

Dampier alone manages approximately 7,500 TEUs of cargo annually, with over 3,000 vessel visits, making it one of Australia’s busiest export ports.

Kongsberg Norcontrol’s VTS solution will enhance navigational safety, streamline traffic management, and support environmental protection across these high-activity waters.

The delivery comprises a comprehensive maritime domain awareness solution with advanced sensors, software, and infrastructure integration. Key components include:

  • A fully equipped operator room for VTS operators to ensure streamlined workflows and optimized response times.
  • Redundant systems to maintain consistent performance and prevent downtime.
  • A robust network infrastructure for seamless data transmission and communication.
  • Integrated CCTV cameras, radar systems, VHF radios, and AIS base stations for comprehensive vessel monitoring.
  • Foresight software system for real-time maritime domain awareness and proactive traffic management.

Björn Coster highlighted the significance of this contract, stating, “We are excited about this opportunity as it represents an important development for us in the Australian market. We look forward to working with Pilbara Ports to improve safety, efficiency, and environmental protection in the area.” For Kongsberg Norcontrol, expanding into Australia is a strategic move, paving the way for contributions to sustainable maritime operations in one of the world’s critical resource regions.

The Port of Dampier and Port of Ashburton have been successfully operating with Kongsberg Norcontrol’s VTS solution for over two months.
