Trond:

Managing complex ship conversions for a sustainable future

Meet Trond Larsen, an experienced Project Manager at Kongsberg Maritime, leading the Hurtigruten Costal Express upgrade. Managing complex projects is about more than keeping schedules on track—it’s about problem-solving, collaboration, and driving meaningful change.

Leading the Hurtigruten Coastal Express Upgrade

The Hurtigruten Coastal Express upgrade is one of Europe’s largest vessel modernization projects, introducing cleaner hybrid systems to optimize operations and improve energy efficiency. As the project manager, Trond oversees everything from equipment delivery to system integration. His role requires clear communication, precise coordination, and strategic planning to ensure all components align with customer expectations and contract requirements.

“We deliver a complete product range package, including ship design, main switchboard, energy storage systems, and a large interface and engineering package with detailed design,” Trond explains. This project involves integrating advanced technologies into existing vessels, requiring meticulous planning and execution.

To keep the project on track, Trond emphasizes structure and clarity. “I set up a project structure, allocate resources, and create a communication plan to ensure deadlines are met,” he says. “Proper communication is key, and sometimes contracts have guidelines like payment milestones that define project management.” Managing expectations and keeping stakeholders aligned is crucial for success.

Trond embraces the challenge of keeping everyone informed and accountable. As project manager, he is the main link between the customer and Kongsberg Maritime. “I am the primary point of contact for the owner or customer, coordinating everything within my organization, including equipment delivery, system installations, and drawings,” he explains. He also notes that it's important to handle unforeseen events in complex conversion projects, ensuring smooth integration of new and old systems.

"One of the best benefits is having a comprehensive view of the project," says Trond. "I’m involved in many parts of it, not just receiving information from others. I understand what’s going on behind the scenes and get to be hands-on with different aspects. It’s quite exciting." Reflecting on the project's success, he adds, "The results after the conversion speak for themselves, meeting all the goals set. This project proves that such a conversion can be run and completed successfully." The new system optimizes operations and increases energy efficiency with:

  • Cutting CO2 emissions by at least

    8%
  • And NOx emissions by

    65%

Being a senior project manager in Kongsberg Maritime

Pål André Eriksen, Senior Vice President in Integration and Energy at Kongsberg Maritime, highlights the significance of project management in Kongsberg Maritime. “The most exciting part of being a Senior Project Manager here is contributing to the implementation of our strategic ambitions. We are positioning ourselves higher in the value chain by taking on the role of integrator, meaning we manage a larger scope of supply. We’re also at the forefront of sustainable solutions, ensuring that our deliveries optimize energy consumption and enhance efficiency for our customers.”

Pål André also explains what sets Kongsberg Maritime apart in a competitive market: “Many companies present themselves as solution providers, but what differentiates us is our well-proven product portfolio, our capability and willingness to take on larger roles, our global footprint, and our deep domain knowledge. This enables us to take a holistic approach to execution, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our customers.”

From Engineer to Project Manager

Trond's journey with Kongsberg Maritime began well before his involvement with the Hurtigruten Coastal Express upgrade project. He began in 2006, straight out of mechanical engineering studies. He started as an engineer in the machinery department, focusing on designing machinery systems for new-build vessels. Over time, his career naturally evolved into project management.

I was given an assignment in the aftermarket division, and I found it really exciting,” he recalls. “That project led to a permanent position, and I’ve been working with global customer support ever since. It’s rewarding to solve complex problems and see the direct impact of our work.

Transitioning from a technical role to project management broadened Trond’s perspective, requiring him to balance engineering, economics, and customer relations. “Every project is different, and that’s what keeps it interesting. I get to work with a variety of vessels and customers worldwide, and no two days are the same,” he says.

Encouraging Future Project Managers

Trond wholeheartedly recommends a project manager position at Kongsberg Maritime. He describes the work as exciting and fulfilling, especially for those who are curious and enjoy structured, dynamic environments. The complexity of the projects, involving numerous systems and equipment, adds to the challenge and satisfaction of the role.
