Hedda’s path to becoming a Field Service Engineer wasn’t straightforward. Initially drawn to engineering without a clear direction, Hedda navigated her studies at OsloMet, specializing in Electronics and IT with a focus on medicine. Although she initially envisioned a career in a hospital, her journey led her to Kongsberg Maritime.
Surprisingly, Hedda wasn’t nervous about starting her job; she was excited. Unlike the constant pressure of graded schoolwork, entering the workforce felt like a natural progression. However, the biggest change was starting to travel on her own—that was the really life-changing part of the job she explained.
Hedda has worked on several exciting projects throughout her two years in Kongsberg Maritime. And when asked what her favorite destination is, her answer is England.
I’ve had a few cool projects, like traveling to New Zealand. I also did a service rotation in China, spent six weeks there, and now I’m going to Brazil. But my favorite projects are in England. I love the culture and everything about the British Isles, and I always get excited when I get a job there.
The frequency of Hedda’s travels varies. Sometimes, she spends two weeks in the office, and then suddenly she’s off again the next day. On average, she travels between 150 to 200 days a year. This extensive travel schedule is also a personal choice, as employees have the flexibility to say no or ask for more travel if they prefer.
When Hedda first started at Kongsberg Maritime, she received comprehensive training that really prepared her for her current role
“We have a test cabinet that simulates our software tools and hardware, helping us get familiarised with different systems. I spent a lot of time doing that, and I also went on training trips where I observed, which helped a lot.”
