Simon, a mechanical engineering graduate from Gothenburg, Sweden, moved to Norway to start his career at Kongsberg Maritime as a Project Engineer. While the transition to a new city and country was daunting, Simon quickly adapted by engaging in social activities, such as joining a local floorball team, which helped him build a new network.
As for many new graduates, the work environment is important to having a positive and rewarding start to their careers.
“Coming to a new city and not knowing anyone, it was crucial to have a positive experience at work. If I had trouble with that, I might not have stayed. But everyone here is really open and welcoming, and that’s a big reason why I enjoy working at Kongsberg Maritime”
The transition from studying to working was significant for Simon. Although he had some experience through his master’s thesis, the shift from the flexible schedule of studying to a more structured work routine was a change. The biggest positive was feeling truly free on weekends:
“During study periods, there was always something I could be working on, but now there's a clear boundary between work and personal time.”
To help Simon transition smoothly into his role, he received training from the start. This included offshore work procedures like helicopter evacuation and company presentations on the software and workflows.
“The training was well-defined, which was very helpful when you are a newcomer.”
When asked about applying theory from school to real-world problems, Simon said many things were new to him:

Simon, Project Engineer in Kongsberg MaritimeIn the end, it’s all physics. At university, you might work on a theoretical problem, like calculating something for a pipe. Now, in real life, I might work on that same pipe for a long time, and it’s really great to see it in the real world, not just as a theoretical example.
