Kongsberg Defence Communications AS (KDC) has signed a contract worth MNOK 254,2 with the Norwegian Army Material Command. The contract refers to development and delivery of MRR Hand-held. The cooperation is approved by the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Defence's.

"The fact that we have won this contract is an important step forward in the company's further strategic development", states President Bjørn Wiggo Bjune of KDC.

"Combined with the portable radio MRR (Multi Role Radio), KDC will have an internationally competitive family of products that could have a major impact on the future profitability of the company.

"The development of the MRR Hand-held will be based on the expertise accrued during the development of MRR. Like the Norwegian Armed Forces, international customers require both portable/vehicle-mounted and hand-held radio systems", continues Bjune.

The new radio will give the Armed Forces a safe and secure communications system for military forces, whether they are operating in Norway or participating in international operations.

Several thousand handheld units have been ordered. This is in addition to the large number of MRR portable and vehicular versions already in full production and deployment. The Armed Forces has emphasised that the MRR Hand-held will be available for the initial activation of the Armed Forces Task Force for International Operations in mid-2003. The delivery of the MRR program to the Norwegian Armed Forces will be completed in 2007.

A total of 12 000 MRR units are now on contracts, with a few thousand more on option (a mix of Vehicular-, Portable and Handheld versions).
