Compact Hull Mounted Sonar (HMS) for ASW in coastal waters

The SS2030C HMS is a compact medium frequency omni directional sonar (360° coverage) for ASW in littoral and shallow waters. It is a downscaled version of the SS2030 sonar which makes this sonar suitable for smaller platforms like coastal patrol boats and Unmanned Surface Vessels (USVs).

Detection of submerged objects

The main purpose is to detect submarines and other submerged objects in the whole water column. Special acoustic properties provide this sonar with capabilities for operation in littoral and shallow waters where strong reverberation dominates over natural noise. Wide pulse bandwidth, high beam Directivity Index (DI) and sensitive receivers provide good resolution and detection performance against weak targets.

3D tracking capabilities

The sonar system features a hull unit equipped with a hoistable cylindrical multi-element transducer array. Each transducer element is electronically and individually controlled, allowing advanced electronic steering that stabilises acoustic beams to compensate for the ship's roll and pitch movements. The cylindrical array offers 3D search coverage of the water volume, transmitting horizontally with full 360° coverage (Omni) or in a sector pointing in the desired direction. The configuration of the transducer array, combined with real-time beam stabilisation and steering, enables 3D target tracking. The SS2030C sonar provides both manual and automatic target track initiation.

Enhanced transmission and remote control features

The Omni transmission pulse and sector transmission can be tilted up or down for improved performance. Additionally, a vertical sector can be transmitted simultaneously to provide better vertical positioning of targets and improved depth separation. The SS2030C sonar is prepared for information exchange with a Combat Management System (CMS). All sonar functions can be remotely controlled via radio link, such as Maritime Broadband Radio (MBR) or similar. For the operator, the sonar has a built-in sound propagation modelling tool that helps find the best sonar setup and optimal tilt angle to provide the maximum detection range of the day.
