SS1221
Anti-submarine warfare (ASW) sonar
The SS1221 HMS is an active omni directional sonar (360° coverage) primarily designed for ASW. The sonar has special capabilities for operation in offshore areas (area limited by seabed/not deep sea) and coastal areas (area limited by the seabed and land). The acoustic features also provide good detection performance against weak targets in strong reverberation areas.
Optimal detection in reverberation zones
The SS1221 has special capabilities for operation in areas where echo reverberation may be a limiting factor more than natural noise. Acoustic features, e.g. high bandwidth, high beam Directivity Index (DI) provide good resolution and combined with high receiving sensitivity it has good detection performance against targets with low Target Strength (TS) in areas with strong reverberation.
Stable acoustic beams
The sonar has a hull unit with a hoistable cylindrical multi-element transducer array. Each transducer element is electronically and individually controlled. This advanced electronic steering provides stabilization of acoustic beams for compensation against ship roll and pitch movements. The cylindrical array provides a 3D search coverage of the water volume and beams can be electronically tilted up and down by operator control. By use of the audio channel output the operator can listen to audio signals in any direction of interest. The transducer array configuration in combination with real time beam stabilization and steering enable 3D target tracking.
Built-in CATA software
The built-in Computer Aided Target Acquisition (CATA) software provides both manual and automatic target track initiation. The sonar can be offered with built-in "Torpedo Management" capability for handling detections and tracks taht are classified as torpedo. A built-in sound propagation modelling tool is available to the operator, which helps the operator find the best sonar setup and the optimal tilt angle that provides the maximum detection range of the day.
Information exchange with CMS
The SS1221 is prepared for information exchange with a Combat Management System (CMS). The integration is flexible and can be via single or dual LAN (copper or fibre).
