KONGSBERG wins contract for deliveries to four drillships

"We call this a 'Full Picture' solution, as it includes dynamic positioning, position reference systems, thruster control, integrated automation systems, riser management and environmental monitoring within the same project. This approach provides procurement and installation efficiencies, whilst streamlining service and maintenance as we act as a single point of contact for a wide range of systems on board,” says Morten Stanger, Regional Manager Offshore, Kongsberg Maritime.

Kongsberg Maritime will commence deliveries early in 2014. All key deliveries from KONGSBERG are scheduled for completion by June 2014 for the first vessel and by October 2015 for the fourth vessel.

We develop and deliver missiles to vessels, coastal artillery, helicopters and fighter planes. KONGSBERG secures back deck handling systems contract for advanced new seismic vessel

Kongsberg Evotec AS, a Kongsberg Maritime company, will provide the complete back deck solution for handling of up to 20 streamers simultaneously aboard a GC Rieber owned new-build seismic exploration vessel, awarded by builder Kleven.

The ST324XT designed by Skipsteknisk in Ålesund, will be built at Kleven's shipyard Myklebust Verft in Sande, Norway, and will be operated by Dolphin Geophysical from Bergen. The vessel can tow up to 20 streamers and features the most advanced technology for handling of cables, wires and ropes. Each streamer winch can contain up to 12,000 meters of streamer cable, giving this vessel high 3D capacity.

The delivery comprises all the back-deck equipment needed for safe and efficient handling of all on board seismic equipment. Kongsberg Evotec moved into brand new offices and fabrication facilities in the autumn of 2012. It will leverage its advanced new engineering and fabrication/test facilities to deliver this project on-time and to specification. These extensive new facilities support Kongsberg Evotec's focus on developing innovative technical solutions for the demanding offshore market.

Delivery of the full back-deck handling system is expected to start in spring 2014.

KONGSBERG had high level of activity in Q1 2013

KONGSBERG had high level of activity in Q1 2013. Operating revenues totalled MNOK 4 033, up 5.1 per cent from Q1 2012. EBITDA came to MNOK 500 in Q1, compared with MNOK 550 in the same period last year. Kongsberg Maritime had very good order income in Q1 with MNOK 2 664 (MNOK 2 541), and new orders for the group totalled MNOK 3 885.

Earnings per share (EPS) were NOK 2.28 in Q1, compared with 2.63 in Q1 2012. KONGSBERG had an equity ratio of 38.8 per cent at the end of the quarter.

Q4 2012/Preliminary annual accounts 2012 with WebCast

KONGSBERG had a high level of activity in Q4 2012, with operating revenues of MNOK 4 209. This is 8.4 per cent higher than in Q4 2011. EBITA came to MNOK 480 in Q4, compared with MNOK 544 in Q4 2011.

The Group was awarded strategically important contracts in Q4, and the influx of new orders was good. The backlog of orders was valued at MNOK 16 523 at year-end 2012, providing a good foundation for 2013.
The preliminary annual accounts for 2012 show operating revenues of MNOK 15 652, compared with MNOK 15 128 in 2011, i.e. an increase of 3.5 per cent.

EBITA was MNOK 1 985 in 2012, a reduction from MNOK 2 132 in 2011. The provisional profit for the year after tax was MNOK 1 320 (MNOK 1 430) equal to NOK 11.05 per share (11.93). Based on this, the Board of Directors proposes to the annual general meeting that the dividend for 2012 be set at NOK 3.75 per share (NOK 3.75), comparable to a dividend share of 33.9 per cent.

Students Solved Extreme Challenges

No fewer than 26 entries were submitted to the competition that was co-organised by NTNU and KONGSBERG. The purpose was to motivate students to complete their studies. Some engineering courses at NTNU have an attrition rate of 30 to 40 per cent. This poses a great challenge for the university – and for Norway’s engineering industry. This means it is also important for business and industry to take part and help shoulder the burden.

The winner was announced at an awards ceremony held in Trondheim on 17 January. The winner was “the Breakfast Club”, consisting of Marius Thoresen, Erik Wilthil, Eirik Lie Strandbråten, Asle Hammerdal and Kristian Breistøl, who made off with the first prize for their thermal chimney project. The solution involved taking advantage of the heat and minerals in these chimneys without harming any species. The team won a trip to Svalbard, where they will be visiting KONGSBERG's satellite ground stations, among other places.

On 17 January, KONGSBERG also organised a Career Day for students in close cooperation with NTNU. There, students gained a certain understanding of the variety of disciplines involved in one of KONGSBERG's important products, i.e. the autonomous underwater vehicle Hugin (AUV). Manuel Knight, formerly an elite soldier with the U.S. Army, delivered a lecture on teamwork in the real world, and Kim Holmén of the Norwegian Polar Institute talked about climate change.

As a sign that KONGSBERG takes the students seriously, the Group's annual executive management seminar, bringing together 140 top executives, was held in Trondheim. The senior managers each hosted a table during the awards ceremony in the evening.

KONGSBERG's four values are determined, innovative, collaborative and reliable. Through this competition, the students were urged to achieve precisely this – and they passed with flying colours.

Contract for upgrading Norway's NASAMS II air defence system

NASAMS is produced by KONGSBERG and Raytheon. The upgrade will be completed within a timeframe of three years. The contract comprises upgrading of existing missile launchers with new electronics and software for increased performance and lifetime extension.

Changes in Executive Management at Kongsberg Gruppen

Espen Henriksen will be taking over as President

of Kongsberg Protech Systems.

Mr. Haugsdal previously held the position as President of the business area Kongsberg Protech Systems (KPS), which he has been leading through a period of strong international growth. In addition to many years of management experience at KONGSBERG, he has also experience from ABB.

"We are in a process to further strengthen our corporate business development team by adding internal and external competences. With his broad international experience of growth, Egil has a very strong background to be heading this development", states CEO Walter Qvam.
Egil Haugsdal will continue to be part of Corporate Management Team with his new area of responsibility.

Stig Trondvold (59), head of Corporate Business Development for the past 12 years, has on his own initiative requested to move into a new role at the end of this year. He will not be part of the Corporate Management Team as from the same date.

"Stig will co-operate closely with the Group management in the further development of our industrial portfolios. I am pleased that we can continue to utilize Stig's broad experience in the further development of the Group", says Mr. Qvam.

Espen Henriksen (47) will be taking over as President of Kongsberg Protech Systems (KPS) as from 1 January 2013, and will be joining the Corporate Management Team as from the same date. Mr. Henriksen has worked at KONGSBERG since 2007, and has previously held the position as Vice President Operations at KPS. He has also been responsible for the subsidiaries KPS USA and KPS Canada, and been globally responsible for procurement and production. Prior to joining KONGSBERG, he has 17 years’ experience from Kværner and Aker Kværner.

104 MNOK (18,5 MUSD) satellite contract

The contract is a frame contract covering data reception and dissemination services for the fleet of Indian satellites. ISRO is operating a large number of polar orbiting satellites used for resource monitoring.

KSAT will be using the company’s ground stations in Svalbard, Norway and in Antarctica, to provide services to ISRO. In addition, the company’s ground station in other locations may also be utilized. The service will be operated from the Tromsø Network Operation Center (TNOC) located in the KSAT main office, in Tromsø Norway. The contract is strengthening the company’s position as the world leading provider of services to satellite owners and operators. The contract is for six years of operation including a three years option. The contract value is approximate MNOK 104 (18.5 MUSD).

KSAT is a commercial satellite center owned 50 percent by KONGSBERG and 50 percent by the Department of Trade and Industry through the Norwegian Space Centre Property. KSAT is situated in Tromsø, Norway with ground stations in Tromsø, Svalbard, Grimstad, Dubai, South Africa, Singapore, Mauritius and the Antarctic. KSAT is immaculately located for both TT&C (Telemetry Tracking & Control), launch support, as well as data reception and near real time Earth Observation services.

Kongsberg Gruppen acquires Apply Nemo

Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies AS (KOGT), a wholly owned subsidiary of Kongsberg Gruppen ASA (KONGSBERG), has entered into an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in Apply Nemo AS, an independent supplier of advanced engineering services, products and solutions for subsea oil and gas applications. The acquisition, which is expected to be completed early January 2013, will strengthen Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies’ scope of deliveries and capacity to the subsea oil and gas markets.

Apply Nemo was established in 1989 with focus on subsea pipeline engineering and complex solutions and has since been transformed into a product focused organisation offering extensive experience in both subsea engineering and the development and manufacture of subsea products. With head office in Oslo, Norway, the company currently has 172 employees and is well established in the North Sea and Australia. The operating revenue for 2012 is expected to be approx. NOK 275 million.

Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies AS (KOGT) has entered into an agreement to acquire 100 % of the shares in Advali AS. The acquisition, which is expected to be completed mid-December 2012, will strengthen KOGT's capabilities and efficiency in software development, testing and support.

Advali is a leading provider of software development services to the Nordic region. The company was originally founded in Norway in 1997. In 2003 it established facilities in Bangalore, India, focusing on software development and testing. All 120 employees are now based in Bangalore.

Today, Advali is a specialized company in relation to the entire software development value chain; from project management, technical design, modelling, development, implementation, and testing.

KONGSBERG and NTNU take responsibility

KONGSBERG and NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, share a common challenge: the student drop-out rate is high on the one hand and there are formidable global challenges to be met on the other. As part of a campaign to motivate students to complete their engineering degrees, KONGSBERG and NTNU are joining forces to organise a competition that will put students' creativity and innovative abilities to the test.

The competition "Extreme solutions for extreme conditions – Your Extreme" is scheduled for kick off on 14 - 16 November. November 8th there was a kick off at NTNU. First prize will be a tour for the winning team to KONGSBERG's installations on Svalbard, among other places, and a meeting with experts at the Norwegian Polar Institute in exotic Ny-Ålesund.

“Knowledge is Norway's most important raw material, meaning that NTNU and KONGSBERG are important to the country's future. As Norway's foremost technology enterprise, KONGSBERG, along with NTNU, aspires to help reduce the drop-out rate for engineering students and recruit more people to study science", explains Sverre Gotaas, Vice President Business Development at KONGSBERG.

In need of good technological ideas

A number of the serious global challenges facing the world call for sophisticated technological solutions. Such solutions are also necessary to engage in commercial activities in the High North. Oil companies are moving their operations to deeper water and locations with more extreme weather conditions, including ice, freezing temperatures and strong winds. That creates a need for advanced technology that enables companies to operate and navigate in frozen waters and under extreme conditions.

Commercial activity in these vulnerable areas also requires good knowledge about how the activity will impact the environment. For many years, KONGSBERG has been a key player in the High North, providing services ranging from monitoring the seabed and the water column to satellite and surveillance technology from pole to pole. Systems for integrated environmental monitoring are an important target area for the Group.

NTNU and KONGSBERG are already working together on several projects in these areas, but more innovation is needed.

“There are social, environmental and technological challenges facing commercial activity in the High North. We would like to see students' suggestion for solutions related to these important issues", continues Sverre Gotaas.

SiteCom real-time drilling software chosen for key BP well project

BP and Kongsberg Oil & Gas Technologies (KONGSBERG), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kongsberg Gruppen ASA, have reached an agreement to develop a suite of decision-support consoles that will present key information to well construction decision makers. The development project is a major part of BP’s multi-million dollar investment in the BP Well Advisor program.

The BP Well Advisor program aims to integrate the analysis and presentation of real-time data with applicable practices and expertise to provide the right information in the right place at the right time; supporting operational decision-making through all phases of the well-construction lifecycle.

The new consoles will be based on KONGSBERG’s Discovery Web platform, which is part of the SiteCom suite of software. The development is expected to deliver four to six new consoles – or ‘dashboards’ – each year of the three year agreement. BP and KONGSBERG are working together to optimize training and support for the solution as it is rolled-out.

Good performance in Q3 2012

Q3 operating revenues totalled MNOK 3 675 and EBITA came to MNOK 570. This corresponds to an EBITA margin for the Group of 15.5 per cent, compared with 16.3 per cent in the same quarter of 2011. Earnings per share (EPS) came to NOK 3.26 in Q3 2012. KONGSBERG had an equity ratio of 38.4 per cent at the end of Q3. The Group has had a good quarter, winning several important contracts that further consolidate the Group's market positions.

“It is gratifying to note that Kongsberg Maritime has further strenghten its position in the advanced offshore market. The business area has won major contracts for deliveries for rigs, drilling vessels, floating production vessels and advanced offshore support vessels, among others. On the defence side, an important confirmation came in August, when KONGSBERG was awarded the contract to supply the next phase of the US CROWS programme. The order with the US Army is part of the framework agreement disclosed on August 18. 2012. The framework agreement is for production, system support and technical engineering support of the M153 CROWS (Common Remotely Operated Weapon Stations) Remote Weapon Station (RWS).

CROWS is a joint acquisition program for weapon stations for the US Army`s vehicle programs. A common solution will result in substantial efficiency gains in respect of protection, training, support and further development.

KONGSBERG to outsource production work to Kitron

	Multi Role Radio in use

KONGSBERG will be outsourcing a large production order to Kitron ASA in Arendal for the fabrication of the BET (operator terminal). BET is a Mid-Life Upgrade of the existing MRR (Multi Role Radio) system. It will add functionality and extend the life of the system into the 2020s.

KONGSBERG has supplied a large number of VHF radios in recent years, including the LFR (Light Field Radio), as well as the MRR. The Norwegian Armed Forces' tactical communications and network equipment programme is one of the largest radio development projects in Norwegian history. The MRR (portable and vehicle-mounted) and the LFR (carried by a soldier) are used by several thousand soldiers and are mounted on numerous vehicles.

Celebrating Canada and Norway’s shared history of polar exploration

Many Canadians grew up learning about the famed polar explorer Roald Amundsen’s adventures, and how important his stay in Canada was for him to succeed. Now the Canadians in London, Ontario can learn more about this through a traveling exhibit.

Roald Amundsen was the first to navigate through the Northwest Passage and reach the South Pole. COLD RECALL is a traveling exhibit that highlights Roald Amundsen’s expeditions through the Northwest Passage and to the South Pole. On Saturday September 29th the exhibit opens in London. KONGSBERG is one of the partners responsible for bringing it there.

Through Amundsen’s own 100 year old photos we get to see what he and his crew had to endure during the exhibition as well as the unique relationship he developed with local Inuit families during his extended stay in Nunavut. The knowledge and skills he learned from them became crucial to his success in winning the race for the South Pole a few years later.

CROWS order valued at MNOK 195

KONGSBERG has received a purchase order to the CROWS II program valued NOK 195 million.

The CROWS II order with the US Army is for spare parts and is part of the increased CROWS II frame contract disclosed on 4 July 2012. The initial CROWS II framework agreement was disclosed on 22 August 2007.

New Research Park opens at Vestfold University College, Norway

By using one of KONGSBERGS simulators the Norwegian minister of Trade and Industry Trond Giske got to learn how to work on a PGS - Petroleum Geo-Services seismic vessel. Friday morning the minister opened the new research park at Vestfold University College in Norway.

Sonja Gundersen from Kongsberg Maritime explained how PGS work deck crew use the so-called Deck Operator Trainer simulator to train recovery of seismic streamers on a seismic vessel. The technology impressed the Minister:

“It is better to make mistakes here than in real life”, he pronounced.

Praised the Horten cluster

In his opening speech, Trond Giske underlined the importance of the maritime cluster in the Horten area, of which Kongsberg Maritime is an important part. Kongsberg Maritime co-operates closely with Vestfold University College, and the minister would like to see more of such close ties between research facilities and the industry.

“Norway has a more complete maritime cluster than any other country. The Horten region is one of the most successful Norwegian regions when it comes to promoting cooperation and good results by focusing on collaboration between research and industry”, Trond Giske said.

Cooperation

Kongsberg Maritime has a close relationship with Vestfold University College through several different research and product development projects. Kongsberg Maritime has also delivered an Offshore Vessel Simulator to the SimSam lab, along with various simulators for education purposes. Recently KM Training opened a new facility at the college, to offer training to customers. Earlier this year the two parties signed a partnership agreement to collaborate even closer on the development of Marine Resource Oslo Fjord (MKO).

Kongsberg Maritime has also awarded an endowed a five year professorship to Professor Kjell Ivar Øvergård, intended to strengthen the college's commitment to maritime research.

KONGSBERG's Offshore Vessel Simulators for Mexico's first offshore training center

Kongsberg Maritime will supply Oceanografia with World-Class technology identical to systems found on board many of the company’s fleet of vessels, especially for Dynamic Positioning (DP), anchor-handling and crane operations.

Kongsberg Maritime will supply Oceanografia with both basic and advanced dynamic positioning trainers. The Advanced K-Pos DP simulation trainer will be integrated to the Kongsberg Offshore Vessel Simulator (KOVS) including DP3 functionality in support of the Oceanografia offshore heavy lift vessel OHLV OSA Goliath. This K-Pos DP system meets all new standards that will be required effective 2014 for DNV, NI and IMCA.

The Oceanografia Offshore Training Center will be certified for use in Sea-time reduction training, where time spent in simulator training significantly reduces time required for live training at sea, enabling safer and more cost-effective DP training.

In addition to the main KOVS bridge, Kongsberg Maritime will also supply Oceanografia with an integrated heavy lift crane simulator that will be matched to the Crane found on OHLV Osa Goliath. Supplied by GlobalSim – a KONGSBERG company, the crane simulator will include a full mission crane cab.

Oceanografia has also invested in a comprehensive range of technical and instructor (train-the trainer) programs that will cover all aspects of the DP, KOVS, Crane, Bridge and Engine Room simulators. To remain current with evolving regulatory changes and the latest KONGSBERG developments, Oceanografia has contracted for a 5-year long term system support program (LTSSP). Ocenaografia has already commenced civil works to prepare its new training centre and the simulators will be ready for training by October 2014.

200 MNOK satellite contract

Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) is awarded a contract to provide ground station services to serve the ESA GMES program (Global Monitoring for Enviroment and Security). The contract covers services to the first three satellites, Sentinel 1, 2 and 3. The satellite program has a build up phase in 2013, and shall be operational until 2020.

KSAT will be using the company’s ground stations in Svalbard Norway to provide services to the ESA GMES program. The Ground Stations will be operated from KSAT’s main office in Tromsø. The contract confirms KSATs position as the world leading provider of ground station services to polar orbiting satelliltes.

The frame contract is for five years of operation and has a value of approx. NOK 200 million.

Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSAT) is awarded a contract to provide ground station services to serve the next generation weather satellites developed by the National Space and Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA), USA.

KONGSBERG wins next phase CROWS contract

KONGSBERG has been awarded a new framework agreement from the U.S. Army for production, system support and technical engineering support of the M153 CROWS Remote Weapon Stations (RWS). The contract was won in a full and open competition. The framework agreement

has a value up to $970M and extends over a five year period. KONGSBERG has received the first order under the framework agreement. The order carries a value of $9.1M. The total scope of the agreement will depend on future demand and annual allocations. KONGSBERG has delivered RWSs to the U.S. Army's CROWS program since 2007.

Improved order situation and stable profits in Q2 2012

Kongsberg Gruppen (KONGSBERG) reports stable profits in Q2 2012.

Q2 operating revenues came to MNOK 3 923. EBITA totalled MNOK 453. This corresponds to an EBITA margin for the Group of 11.5 per cent. At the same date last year, the Group had an EBITA margin of 12.5 per cent. Earnings per share (EPS) amounted to NOK 2.61 in Q2.

KONGSBERG had an equity ratio of 38.1 per cent at the end of the quarter.

“All in all, the Group is well-positioned in the shipping, offshore and defence markets, and its backlog of orders is satisfactory", concludes Walter Qvam, CEO of KONGSBERG.

Developed as part of Kongsberg Maritime's leading Offshore Vessel Simulator, in co-operation with Petroleum Geo-Services (PGS), the seismic streamer function of the Kongsberg Offshore Vessel Simulator – Deck Operator Trainer is based on the PGS seismic vessel, Ramform Viking. The Deck Operator Trainer offers a wealth of new training possibilities. The new seismic streamer function nominated for the award is designed to train engineers and crew in seismic streamer deck handling. It is currently installed and being used to train PGS operators at Vestfold University College in Norway.

The seismic streamer function of the Kongsberg Offshore Vessel Simulator – Deck Operator Trainer utilises the KinectTM for Windows motion sensing device, to track students' movements and display them on a high-fidelity virtual representation of a streamer deck, viewed across three vertically mounted 65" TFT-LCD screens. The simulator consists of three stations using this set-up, allowing for direct communication between team members, standing close to each other in the physical space.

Can be customised

"We're delighted that we have been nominated for this award based on the innovation and potential for improvements in safety and efficiency the new seismic streamer function of the Kongsberg Offshore Vessel Simulator – Deck Operator Trainer offers," comments Erik Hovland, Sales and Marketing Manager, Kongsberg Maritime (Simulation). "The trainer features innovative control and interaction through the use of KinectTM for Windows and a system of virtual tools. In addition to training of seismic streamer operators, the system can be customised for training of e.g. anchor handling, crane and helideck operators and other back deck work where safety procedures and team training are vital to ensure safety and efficiency in operations."

Kongsberg Evotec, a wholly owned subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime, started development of the Bulk Hose Securing Unit (BHSU) in order to mitigate the risk of injury or loss of life during unloading/loading operations on Offshore Supply Vessels. The system is a joint innovation through Statoil's LOOP technology development program in cooperation with Innovation Norway and offshore vessel operator, Eidesvik AS.

Much safer

OSV crew are currently required to stand on deck to manually receive and secure bulk hoses used for the transfer of bulk cargo from ship-to-platform or vice versa. Kongsberg Evotec's unique BHSU system makes this operation much safer as the procedure is now coordinated and maintained from the wheelhouse and crew no longer need to enter the hazardous area. The BHSU device connects to the cargo rail and enables an operator to remotely handle bulk hoses. This negates the need for personnel to manually handle bulk hoses on deck, which removes the risk of personnel injury during bulk transfer operations.

"The BHSU has potential to reduce the risk of accident or injury during operations using bulk hoses, by completely removing the need for personnel to be on deck," comments Jon Olav Kopperstad, VP Offshore Subsea & Supply, Kongsberg Evotec. KONGSBERG has also received purchase orders for spare parts and depot support valued NOK 198 million under this modification.

Significant dynamic positioning in ice research project gets green light

Kongsberg Maritime DP and simulation systems provide foundation for improving ice operations

The final piece of a CAD $8.5 million research project to improve DP operations in ice fell into place on May 23, 2012 when the Government of Canada announced a contribution of $3.2 million to the project from the Atlantic Innovation Fund, administered by the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

Led by long-time Kongsberg Maritime simulator customer CMS – the Centre for Marine Simulation (Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University), the five-year research project aims to improve the safety and efficiency of oil and gas operations in ice environments by improving dynamic positioning (DP) system technologies for operations in ice.

Central to the collaboration is the National Research Council of Canada's Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering facilities in St. John's, Newfoundland. Principal study investigator, Dr. Jim Millan, is well known internationally for his team's work with DP and hull-ice interaction, both of which have paved the way ahead for the current project.

As resource exploration continues to grow in northern latitudes, increasing demand will be placed on technology to ensure safety and efficiency of operations. Operations in the Arctic present unique challenges in terms of the remoteness of the area, the vast distances, the scarcity and cost of support logistics and the risk to the environment. The possibility to extend offshore drilling and production seasons in ice-infested waters is therefore of significant interest to the oil and gas industry.

Kongsberg Maritime will be the commercialisation partner in the project. In addition to providing DP equipment, engineering services and a financial contribution to the research team, KONGSBERG remains optimistic the research findings will ultimately result in the development and commercialisation of a specialised DP system module specifically for ice operations that can be provided as an option to the company's current and future generations of DP technology.

Simulation testing is central to the research, whereby new algorithms developed as a result of discoveries from ice tank testing will be first tested in the Kongsberg Maritime DP simulator. Simulation testing will also play a key role in assessing the limiting weather criteria for safe DP operations in ice and the development of new recommended guidelines for the same. A full suite of new CMS 'DP-in-Ice' simulation training courses are also expected to flow from the project.

CMS is a Nautical Institute-certified DP training site currently equipped with the latest Konsgberg Maritime DP simulator technology (based on KONGSBERG K-Pos DP systems) and managed by highly experienced DP instructional staff. Of particular interest to the Centre is the ability to better analyse vessel capability and the limitations associated with positioning in ice infested environments.

"Controlled movement is vital for the safety of personnel and the environment. DP systems on the market today are not optimised to fully account for the forces and movements that exist in ice environments and it is these input variables that need to be understood for effective and reliable arctic DP operations," commented CMS Director Christopher Hearn.

KONGSBERG has signed a contract with BAE Systems to supply combat systems for military vehicles. BAE Systems, Sweden, is the main supplier to the Norwegian Army's upgrade program of the CV90 infantry fighting vehicle. KONGSBERG leads a Norwegian team of KONGSBERG, Thales Norway and Vinghøg.

KONGSBERG will deliver Integrated Combat Solution to CV90. Integrated Combat Solution is a system based on open standards for connectivity and integration of sensors, weapons, communication networks and security systems. The system increases crew situational awareness and ability to operate swiftly and efficiently.

Norway and the USA agree to collaborate on integration of Joint Strike Missile (JSM) on F-35. This opens great opportunities for KONGSBERG and other Norwegian industry.

US support for integration

Today Defence Minister Espen Barth Eide announced that the Norwegian Government has decided to start the process to finalize the development of JSM and integration on F-35. The decision comes as a consequence of Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta’s confirmation of US support for integration.

Through the development of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), the Norwegian Armed Forces has established KONGSBERG and other Norwegian industry in the top tier as a supplier of long-range, precision strike missiles that will meet military requirements in a 20 to 30-year perspective.

“It is of great importance that the US authorities have confirmed their support for the integration of the JSM on the F-35. In doing so, the operational needs of the Norwegian Armed Forces and international partners will be met. Furthermore, this will be an important contribution to the industrial content of the F-35 procurement. JSM is the world leader in its category and further strengthens the F-35's operational capacity", states Walter Qvam, CEO of KONGSBERG.

Open up new opportunities

“KONGSBERG has involved a number of Norwegian subcontractors in the first phases of the JSM development. Today's decision for the integration of JSM on F-35 open up new opportunities for a long-term Norwegian industrial success that may be worth as much as NOK 25 billion. In future full-scale production, the JSM programme could translate into 450 jobs at KONGSBERG and significant assignments for more than 100 Norwegian subcontractors for several decades", comments Harald Ånnestad, president of Kongsberg Defence Systems.

As part of the JSM development programme, new operational capabilities will be developed and tested for subsequent upgrading of KONGSBERG's Naval Strike Missile (NSM). The NSM is now in production for the Armed Forces of Poland and Norway.

Successful demonstration of ground launched ESSM

The KONGSBERG and Raytheon HAWK XXI air defence system successfully engaged an air target with an Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) during a live-fire demonstration at the Andoya Rocket Range in Norway in late May 2012.

"This is part of the KONGSBERG and Raytheon continuous evolution of enhancing air defence systems to meet the evolving threats”, said Eirik Lie, Executive Vice President, Kongsberg Defence Systems. He continued, “The ESSM ground launch confirms our ambition of expanding our system capabilities and show current HAWK customers a path to upgrade their systems.”

The demonstration of the ESSM effector was supported by both United States Security Assistance Management Directorate “SAMD” and The Royal Norwegian Air Force (RNoAF) through the use of government furnished tactical hardware, making this event possible.

The proven capabilities of the KONGSBERG Fire Distribution Center (FDC), the NASAMS Canister Launcher, the ThalesRaytheon Systems AN/MPQ-64F1 Sentinel Radar for target tracking and Raytheon’s Hawk High Power Illuminator (HPI) as the semi-active missile guidance source, were showcased in this demonstration.

Introducing the already proven and fielded NASAMS Launcher as part of the HAWK XXI system, also gives HAWK Users the opportunity to use other missiles as the AIM-120 AMRAAM. The highly capable and combat-proven HAWK system is deployed by 17 nations worldwide. The ESSM ground launched missile will enhance HAWK`s capability and provide operators with an in-production replacement missile.

Kongsberg Maritime to transfer offshore oil & gas expertise to wind energy sector

The Kongsberg Group (KONGSBERG) has chosen the Kongsberg Maritime facility at Lade in Trondheim, Norway as the home of its new ‘Centre for Optimum Wind Park Operation'. The new wind power division, is a joint venture between global marine technology developer Kongsberg Maritime and parent company KONGSBERG, and has been implemented to develop solutions for wind park management and operations that will ultimately lower the cost of wind power generation.

"Kongsberg Maritime is a world leading supplier of automation equipment to ships and the offshore sector. Our experience and technology is completely transferrable to the wind power segment and we believe that we can offer a strong portfolio of solutions to support wind park operational efficiency and predictability," comments Andreas Jagtøyen, Vice President, Merchant Marine Trondheim, Kongsberg Maritime.

The possibilities of Kongsberg Maritime's contribution to wind power generation are already being realised through the Windsense R&D project, which is a vital element of the company's commitment to the sector. The project is supported by the Research Council of Norway and headed by the new wind power division at Kongsberg Maritime Lade, in partnership with eight other companies and R&D institutions.

Wind park management and monitoring are the two main focuses of the new division. There is a clear case for transferring Kongsberg Maritime's proven maritime and offshore systems to benefit the production of wind power and to meet the challenges the sector faces. Weather conditions can make wind parks inaccessible to personnel for long periods, and any stoppage results in major economic consequences, so the possibilities of advanced monitoring and automation systems are extremely attractive to operators. The wind park management focus will aim at maximum operational predictability and profitability of the wind park's power generation.

"As more and more offshore wind parks are built, good systems for remote monitoring and diagnostics, as well as calculating remaining economic life, will be particularly important," continues Jagtøyen. "Our focused technology development will result in sophisticated systems for monitoring and condition-based maintenance, thus reducing maintenance costs and non-scheduled downtime. Such a system has clear parallels to the solutions we develop for integrated operations in the offshore oil and gas sector."

The wind power sector is growing fast globally and KONGSBERG is committed to making a solid contribution to the targeted 30% reduction in cost price per kilowatt hour, which in turn will boost the competitiveness of wind power.

New System Rounds Out AUV Fleet to 5 Vehicles

Hydroid, Inc., a subsidiary of Kongsberg Maritime and the leading manufacturer of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles - AUVs, announces that the Japanese Ministry of Defense - MOD has purchased one REMUS 600 system for mine countermeasure operations. The new purchase brings the Japanese MOD AUV fleet to five vehicles.

"We are excited by the Japanese Ministry of Defense's growing use of Hydroid AUVs for detecting underwater mines," said Christopher von Alt, president and co-founder of Hydroid. "The REMUS 600 is ideally suited for this application, as, when fully configured, its exceptional endurance allows it to operate underwater for long periods of time in varying depths of water."

The REMUS 600 AUV was specifically designed for operations requiring extended endurance, increased payload capacity and greater operating depth.

Earlier this year the Japanese MOD purchased four REMUS 100 systems for investigating and mapping seafloor dispersion of contaminants as well as mine countermeasure operations. Mine detection work includes locating explosive devices and other undetonated ordnances as well as finding and classifying submerged objects.

Hydroid's REMUS AUVs are modular: They can be fitted with a variety of sensors and used to aid in hydrographic surveys, harbor security operations, debris field mapping, scientific sampling and mapping, as well as many basic and applied research programs. With more than 300 vehicles in the field, Kongsberg Maritime is currently the AUV market leader.

The order for the MOD purchase was submitted by SEA Corporation, Hydroid’s representative in Japan.

KONGSBERG’s PROTECTOR Dual RWS selected as part of the Canadian TAPV program

The Canadian Treasury Board announced that they have chosen Textron Systems to deliver the next generation of Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicles (TAPV). Textron Systems, the vehicle provider, is in a close partnership with KONGSBERG, for the delivery of an advanced Dual Remote Weapon Station (DRWS) tailor-made to address the specific TAPV requirements.

This confirms the strong position of KONGSBERG’s RWS’ and strengthens our relationship with Textron Systems, the Canadian Government, as well as the Canadian Army which has utilized our PROTECTOR systems on international operations for many years.

The PROTECTOR TAPV DRWS is based on the existing PROTECTOR family of remote weapon stations from KONGSBERG. This innovative weapon station features, amongst other things, a coaxial weapon, dual user functionality and a surveillance mode. These enhancements will provide additional capabilities for the soldiers operating the vehicle. The PROTECTOR DRWS is a likely candidate as the future RWS platforms for the Canadian Army.

The PROTECTOR DRWS will be produced in KONGSBERG’s production facilities in London, Ontario, Canada, and initial deliveries for verification and testing are expected to start first half of 2013.
